New state master takes helm

By June Hendrickson

If you have not heard yet, Rob Horgen issued his resignation from the office of State Grange master effective April 1. In accordance with Grange law, I, as overseer, will assume the position of master until the next scheduled election for master, which will be at our 2009 convention.

The job of state master requires a great deal of time and commitment to the office and the organization. Rob noted in his letter of resignation that, while he had the full support of his family, “I think it is better for the Grange to have a master who will be free to immerse themselves fully in the life of the Grange.”

We all thank Rob for his service, and look forward to working with him in the future. Putting his family first shows what kind of a man he is, and the Grange will continue to support him and his family.

The transition period should be reasonably smooth, thanks to my many years of service as overseer and the stellar staff here at State Grange headquarters in Olympia. We have a great staff, working very hard because they believe in this organization and what it stands for. Be sure to swing by at state convention this year and thank the staff members for all their hard work.

Speaking of convention, we are mere months away from the annual session in Colville. Lodging in the Colville area is very scarce, so if you haven’t done so already, do not wait any longer to make your overnight arrangements.

I also strongly encourage Grange Masters to fill out and return the form telling us which committee they wish to serve on. If the master is not going, he or she should pass this form on to their delegates and encourage them to return the form to state headquarters as soon as possible.

Strong attendance to state convention is critical to a productive session. It is your best shot at molding the direction of this organization.

I welcome the challenge of this position and look forward to meeting with as many of you as I can. The staff and I are wide open to any and all suggestions, comments, etc., and will do our best to serve you and this organization in whatever way needed.
