Washington State Grange awards college scholarships
June 6, 2005 ─ The Washington State Grange Foundation has announced the recipients of the State Grange's scholarships for 2005.
A total of 38 scholarships were given this year. Scholarships awarded by the foundation come from endowments dedicated to aid students with their college education expenses.
The $2,500 Norman Bucholz Agricultural Scholarship went this year to Alys Joleen Durfey, a student at Washington State University and member of Ewartsville Grange in Whitman County since 1994. She is majoring in agriculture technology and management. Her parents, James and Judith, have deep roots in agriculture and also belong to Ewartsville Grange.
Marissa Wilkie of Medical Lake is another Washington State University student, majoring in natural science and broadcast journalism. She was awarded the Kegley Agricultural Scholarship, a four-year grant providing $750 annually. Marissa is a former State Grange legislative intern, a member of McIntosh Grange in Spokane County and is active with the FFA.
The four-year recurring Martin & Gracie Forry Agricultural Scholarship will provide Chelsie Schaefer with $750 per year, which the Touchet High School graduate plans to use toward her biology education at Eastern Wyoming College. Chelsie is a member of Touchet Grange in Walla Walla County, as are her parents, Robert and Susan. Previous winners and ongoing recipients of this award are Amanda Zwainz, Matthew LeFever and Kimberly Lynch.
Washington State University student Ashley Aly'ce Fagerlie has been awarded the four-year recurring Delpha Goude Agricultural Scholarship. The award provides $750 annually toward her degree in international business and marketing. Her parents, Dan and Ann, are longtime members of San Poil Grange in Ferry County. Previous winners and ongoing recipients of this scholarship include Randi Lynn Nickels, Joseph Dowling and Jon Dowling.
Freshly graduated from A.G. West Black Hills High School in Thurston County, South Union Grange member Nicholas A. Smith is heading to South Puget Sound Community College with a $750 Kiona Benton (Jack Koss Memorial) Agricultural Scholarship.
Fourteen students were selected to receive the $750 Delpha Goude Agricultural Scholarships this year. They are:
Kristin Scholz, a member of North and South Palouse Grange in Whitman County, along with her parents Todd and Roxana. She is majoring in Animal Science (Production) at Lewis & Clark State College.
Amy Whipple, an elementary education major at Eastern Washington University. Her parents Joseph and Janet, are members of Crab Creek Grange in Lincoln County.
Joyce Burt is enrolled in the RN to BSN program at Seattle Pacific University and works as an RN/staff nurse in Arlington. Her mother, Alyce, is a member of Violet Prairie Grange in Thurston County.
Danae Crain attends Oregon's Western Baptist College and is majoring in education. Her parents, Stacy and Cherri (a State Grange employee), are members of Prosperity Grange in Thurston County.
Whitworth College student and Biology major Kristen J. Dormaier's parents Roger and Janet are members of Oroville Grange in Okanogan County.
Colby Tanneberg is a speech pathology major at Eastern Washington University. Her parents, Doug and Michele, are members of Mansfield Grange in Douglas County.
Jodi Patrice Prout recently graduated Pullman High School and plans to attend Washington State University, majoring in photojournalism. Her parents, Jerry and Kathy, are members of Ewartsville Grange in Whitman County.
Lance Kissler is a graduate student at Eastern Washington University, working on a master's of science in communications. He and his parents, Robert and Patricia, are members of Odessa Grange in Lincoln County.
Jennifer Scholz and her parents Todd and Roxanna are members of North and South Palouse Grange in Whitman County. Jennifer attends Eastern Washington University.
Derek Kiehn recently graduated Mead High School and plans to attend Whitworth College. He and his parents, Marc and Nancy, are members of Half Moon Grange in Spokane County.
Natalie Boltinghouse majors in social work at the University of Washington. Her parents, Bill and Gaynelle, are members of Chimacum Grange in Jefferson County.
Brian Dormaier, whose parents Roger and Janet are members of Oroville Grange in Okanogan County, attends Whitworth College and majors in computer science.
Diana Hamil is a member of Selah Heights Grange in Yakima County. She attends Green River Community College and majors in court reporting/captioning.
Blake Stromberger is a computer science/engineering major at Washington State University. His parents, Alan and Sharlene, are members of Crab Creek Grange in Lincoln County.
This year's recipient of the $750 Marion and Snowy Vanderpool Scholarship is Lindsey Kiehn who, along with her parents Marc and Nancy, belongs to Half Moon Grange in Spokane County. She attends Whitworth College and is majoring in international studies.
Lone Oak Grange Scholarship winners, each collecting $750, are:
Melissa Stagner is a recent Castle Rock High School graduate who plans to attend Pacific Lutheran University and study elementary education. She and her parents, Russell and Teresa, are members of Sunnyside Grange in Cowlitz County.
Kyle C. Lepper and his parents Paul and Cindi are members of Ralston Grange in Adams County. Kyle recently graduated Washtucna High School and plans to major in architecture at the University of Idaho.
Nicole Cockle attends the University of Washington, majoring in English and minoring in French. She and her parents, Kenneth and Karen, are members of Riverside Valley Grange in Pierce County.
Alissa Barr is a member of Outlook Grange in Yakima County. She is currently enrolled in Trinity Christian College in Illinois, majoring in special education.
Four students will receive $750 Women's Activities Scholarships. They are:
Katharine M. Finkbeiner, double majoring in special education and elementary education at Central Washington University, is a member of Odessa Grange in Lincoln County, as are her parents, Brian and Diana.
Michelle Stagner and parents Russell and Teresa are members of Sunnyside Grange in Castle Rock. Michelle attends Pacific Lutheran University, where she majors in nursing.
Lacey Kay Rickey is majoring in elementary education, with a minor in special education, at Eastern Washington University. She and her parents, Randy and Lola, are members of Diamond Lake Grange in Pend Oreille County.
Annagreta Bowen is a Spanish/pre-med double-major at Western Washington University. She and her parents, Michael and Annie, are members of Kellogg Marsh Grange in Snohomish County.
While no Ray Kamerrer Scholarship was awarded in 2005, three students, Cortney Deardoff, Johnathan Hill and Callie Hulce continue to benefit from the four-year award.
